THIS MONTH’S PRESENTATION WILL BE GIVEN BY FINGER LAKES MEMBER, DALE FLINN.
Dale was born in Spokane, Washington, but grew up on a horse farm in Lansing, New York. His photography career started at a young age (10?) when his parents gave him a Kodak Instamatic (which he still has) to use while traveling in England and Scotland. Most of his work centers around travel, although in recent years he has added more mechanical, farm equipment, nature, and bird photography to his portfolio. He blames his wife for getting him to become a bird photographer as she would bring him along on her birding expeditions and he had no choice but to bring his camera along. Dale enjoys travel photography, architectural, mechanical/machinery, and nature photography the most, looking at/for details and different angles that reveal new and different aspects of his subjects, bordering on abstract sometimes. Although he has been shooting digital for some time now, he still maintains the frugality of shots he learned when shooting primarily color slides in his younger years. Despite sometimes shooting several hundred, or even thousand frames, shooting slide film meant expensive processing back in the day, so shots could not be wasted. He still lives in Lansing, across the street from the farm where he grew up, along with his wife Gayle, three cats, and a retired racing Greyhound named Bart. Someday he hopes to actually sell some of his photographic work rather than just look at it!
This month’s presentation will be a combination travelogue and work flow study based upon my trip to Tanzania last summer. During the two weeks in-country I took more than 5,000 photos and will share a very select few of them to showcase the trip and some of the photographic opportunities I had while there. To keep it more interesting than just a travelogue, I plan to show the progression I take with a few of my photos from what comes out of the camera to what I would consider finished – at least enough to present to others. My work flow is pretty simple and I will not be using PhotoShop, so it will something different for most of the attendees. My goal is to always get as close to the finished product as possible in-camera, but I have come to realize the value of sometimes just getting material I want into the shot and working to bring out the best image I can later on.
